Tips put in gold medal effort

  • What a terrific performance by the young girl that sang both the American and Canadian national anthems before last night's Kelowna Rockets home game. Unfortunately the inspirational effort didn't rub off on the home team. The Rockets looked uninspired in a 6-2 loss to the Everett Silvertips. The Tips received goals from six different players in the win. It was the Tips 4th win in a row and 4th game in five night's.
  • The Rockets appeared out of sync all night long and produced little on the power play. While they managed one goal with the extra man they also gave up a shorthanded goal.
  • Rookie defenceman Antoine Corbin was rewarded with a third period goal that appeared to deflect off of forward Mitchell Callahan before getting past Tips goaltender Kent Simpson. It was Corbin's second goal of the season but would have been Callahan's 13th of the year.
  • Brandon McMillan was given the choice on whether to play in the game or sit this one out. The 19 year-old took a pass. McMillan will rejoin his team at practice Thursday in preparation for a home and home series with the Kamloops Blazers.
  • A nice gesture by Tips associate head coach Jay Varady on our post game on AM 1150. After conducting a pre-game interview with Varady after winning gold with Team USA at the World Junior Hockey Championship, the personable coach brought his gold medal to our broadcast booth location and let Gord and I admire it for a few minutes as we conducted our post game show. Varady handed me the medal and walked away. Unfortunately after cleaning up the Tips video gear near our broadcast location, Varady retrieved the medal before making his way back down towards the dressing room.
  • The Rockets could have no less than three veterans back in the lineup Friday against the Blazers. Lucas Bloodoff, Mitchell Chapman and Brandon McMillan are all good bets to play against the Blazers in a huge weekend series.
  • I spoke to Rockets GM Bruce Hamilton during the second intermission of last night's game. Hamilton has spent the last eleven days at the World Juniors in Saskatoon. Hamilton admits "lots of people have inquired about him" in reference to forward Brandon McMillan.
  • Hamilton says the deal would have to be "exceptional" if he were to trade McMillan and he would only be dealt to a contending team.
  • Hamilton says Tyson Barrie is "untouchable" when it comes to a trade. Hamilton says he will be a Kelowna Rocket until he turns pro.

hmmm a little disappointing that Barrie is untouchable. He is good but untouchable.....McCouglin and Bulmer I would keep, but if the right deal came along for a young defenceman with less offensive talent but more defenceive talent I would trade Barrie. Good thing this armchair GM isn't running the show :)

Tyson Barrie will play next season as a 19 year-old. Do you trade away arguably one of the top three defenceman in the WHL?

Hell no!

Barrie is a pleasure to watch when he is skating hard and stickhandling in traffic ..it is a shame to loose every good players to the pro so early after all it would be nice to keep them till they are 20 ..... Myers would have dominated this league this year and we would probably be way closer to vancouver in the standings I would love to see a trade Mcmillan)that would solidify our 17 year slots or an 18 yr sniper . Hamilton has showed us that when trading deadline approach he is pretty sharp and not afraid of making moves

Another loss. Hopefully this weekend we can win. With Lucas Bloodoff, Mitchell Chapman and Brandon McMillan coming back(If they all are) I think it will give the team a boost.
From listening to your broadcast I am guessing you are not a fan of Pat Smith. Few games ago Colby Smith was the ref(like last night). I also thought it was Pat smith(not a fan of Smith).

I see your point and I hope he works out to be a top three
D-man and can play a full season injury free.

Regan can you explain the penalties that Astles took last night, what a crock, Cumiskey boards our player & could of hurt him seriously, Astles challenges him & he obliged, not like he attacked him, but he still ends up with 2 minors, a major & a game, whats up with that?? I thought at that point the Rockets were coming on, only down 2 goals, but the Tips get the PP, & you just knew they would score!!

Barrie is elite and has a great chance of playing for Canada in the world jrs next year - agree he is pretty much untouchable.

If they can get good return on trading Mac that would materially strengthen the team over the next next 2 yrs, then they should do it. As far as only trading him to a contender - that's a given. No non-contender is going to trade for him knowing that he is turning pro next year. Plus he'd probably love going to Brandon / Calgary / Saskatoon, knowing that they could go deep in the playoffs.

Barrie was one of the few Rockets players that showed up and played the whole game against the 'Tips. One of the few highlites in a dismal performance by the team.

My thoughts on the penalties from Wednesday's game vs. Everett at the 11:24 mark of the 2nd period.

EVT Cumiskey, 11:24 - Boarding , 2 min (Good Call)
EVT Cumiskey, 11:24 - Major-Fighting , 5 min (Obvious Good Call)
KEL Astles, 11:24 - Instigator , 2 min (PP) (Not a Good Call)
KEL Astles, 11:24 - Unsportsmanlike Cnd. , 2 min (Good Call)
KEL Astles, 11:24 - Major-Fighting , 5 min (Obvious Good Call)
KEL Astles, 11:24 - Game Misconduct , 10 min (Goes with the Unsportsmanlike Conduct Call)

Astles 2 mins for Unsportsmanlike Conduct for throwing the player to the ice during a fight unfortunately comes with a game misconduct. New rule this year and the first time I have seen it called.

There should have been a 10 min Misconduct as part of the Instigator, otherwise known as the “Bettman” 17, but was not included on the internet score sheet. It was on the official score sheet.

I have been searching the rule book for the description of the “Throw Down” ruling during a fight. The rule book is 208 pages and being a slow reader this may take awhile.

Here is the instigator rule:

"An instigator of a fight shall be a player or goalkeeper who by his actions or demeanor demonstrates any/some of the following criteria: distance traveled; gloves off first; first punch thrown; menacing attitude or posture; verbal instigation or threats; conduct in retaliation to a prior game (or season) incident; obvious
retribution for a previous incident in the game or season. A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an fight shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a ten-minute misconduct."

I could not find in the rule book any mention of the new fighting rules. The rule book I downloaded from the WHL website is the 2008-2009 version.
