Call it middle finger mojo

  • Not even a deep cut to his middle finger from a skate blade could keep Mitchell Callahan from helping the Kelowna Rockets to a 3-1 win over the visiting Tri City Americans. Callahan, who suffered a deep cut from the skate of a linesman in a first period scrap with Americans defenceman Brock Sutherland, scored once and added an assist in the Rockets 39th win of the season. Callahan's cut was deep, but fortunately didn't sever any tendons. Let's just say the feisty forward won't be fighting any time soon.
  • Callahan scored the game winner when his shot from just inside the blue line was partially stopped by Americans goaltender Drew Owsley before squeaking over the goal line. Callahan's goal broke a 1-1 tie before Evan Bloodoff scored his 22nd goal of the season into an empty net as the Rockets won for the 20th time this season on home ice.
  • Adam Brown was named the games 1st star and was full credit for making life miserable for the Americans. Brown made several big saves and a times was lucky during a goal mouth scramble in the third period when not even he knew where the puck was. The Americans only goal came on a power play chance after Rockets forward Colton Heffley was charged with a five minute major and game misconduct for charging.
  • I have no argument with the five minute major for charging, but how does Tri City d-man Brock Sutherland get away with only a two minute minor penalty for kneeing after taking down forward Colton Sissons before the game is even a minute old? Sissons crumbles to the ice in pain and never returns after the hit while Tri City captain Kruise Reddick is back on the power play after Heffley gets the boot for the charging major.
  • Rockets Director of Player Personnel Lorne Frey was honoured before the game with the WHL Distinguished Services Award for his hard work with the league and the Rockets organization. Outside of GM Bruce Hamilton, no one has served as employee longer with the Rockets than Frey. WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and former Rockets defenseman Josh Gorges were on hand for the pre-game ceremony.
  • Speaking of the 'Commish', here is my conversation with him before the game.

I agree Regan, that kneeing penalty should of been a major & a game misconduct easliy!! No consistency in the reffing in this league at all!! Quite the gong show in Vancouver last night!! Look out for the Bruins.

best team game of the year. lost a couple guys early, callahan out for a while, and the boys played well together. astles best game of the year by far. as for the penalties, sisson got up to quick, needed the trainer to come out. its hard for the ref to assess a five and a game if the player is not known to be hurt or not. its automatic 5 and game if the infraction causes an injury. states in the rule book and the ref has to call it that way. heffley had charge penalty that could only be called a five or nothing due to the fact that reddick looked like he was out for the rest of the game. little play acting for sure but effective. personally i thought it should have been no penalty as heffley was not striding but coasting, sure he had speed built up, and had to cut into him to hit reddick. i think reddick got caught with a head down and it looked worse than it really was. ggod game though.

Somebody explain this to me: “3/10/11 Colton Heffley Kelowna Two games for charge major and g.m. versus Tri-Cities on March 9” http://www.whl.ca/page/WHL-discipline

Two games for that hit. Check out the Vancouver / Chilliwack game last night. Only one game for a charging major in that game and Heffley gets two. Must be a miss print on the WHL website.

I hope Colton Sissions plays soon.

Kruise Reddick missed less than 3 minutes of the Power Play and Heffley gets two games. WOW.

I guess when you get hit you should roll around like they do in soccer to draw a major. Let's hope it never comes to this in hockey.

(Note I am not implying Reddick rolled around to draw the major, he looked shaken up for sure.)

Correction: Penalty in the Vancouver / Chilliwack game was Checking from Behind.

Heffley is getting TWO GAMES FOR THAT HIT?!?!?! That is a complete joke. I know a lot of people read this forum and I HOPE....I HOPE the head of the WHL discipline reads it so he can read this. The guy who makes these decisions is a joke.

Knee jerk reaction from league. They must appear that safety is priorty and not like the NHL and the Chara hit where they did nothing. Public opinion is changing. Safety is a priority. Still think the call is a bad one but rather they err on the side of safety. This stance will bring a better game of hockey in the future.
