Don Hay comments on Shinnimin hit

This interview was conducted Friday and originally aired that night on AM 1150. The interview was more relevant at the time, but Hay's thoughts still may be of interest for those who missed it. Here's the link to the hit in question. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27ymvQ_5s2Y&feature=player_embedded

Don stated players should be learning checking in minor hockey. This is not happening. My son has played five yrs of AA and AAA. There was some instruction at beginnig of minor peewee (11 yrs) but that has been it. He's now 15. Checking skills and positional safety is not being developed. Three Bantam AAA players suffered concussions at the same time last season in Winnipeg, all due to head shots with fists. They missed a combined 14 games. Only one player received a penalty and a one game suspension. Suspensions need to match the injury time if that time exceeds the original suspension. Coaches need to address their own player's who violate the rules, irregardless if the officials called a penalty. Head shot and checking from behind penalties need to be longer. Fighting was eradicated in minor hockey due to the penalty becoming longer (ejection and suspension) versus the old 5 minute major. The same could happen with head shots and checking from behind, along with improved development.
