'Gugg'antuan Win

  • Mark Guggenberger was considered by many as the weak link as the Kelowna Rockets began their quest for a WHL championship in mid March. Six weeks later the 20 year-old goaltender is turning a lot of heads with his play and changing the minds of many who believed he was not the answer when the Rockets acquired him at the trade deadline. Guggenberger made 27 saves while Mikael Backlund scored twice in the third period leading the Rockets to a 5-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen, taking a 2-0 lead in the WHL championship series.
  • Guggenberger played Saturdays game essentially breathing through one nostril. A bloody nose in game one had him playing with a nose plug in game two. While it wasn't a pretty sight, it is safe to say he was breathing a little easier after winning back-to-back games against a Hitmen team that hadn't lost two straight games at home all season.
  • If Hitmen defenceman Keith Seabrook’s objective in this series is to get in the face of Rockets leading scorer Jamie Benn, it is fair to say he has accomplished his goal just two short games into this series. Seabrook leveled Benn in a second period collision in game one and then literally knocked him out of the game with a first period hit in game two. The hit was so hard that Benn lost his helmet before crashing to the ice. Benn never returned to action.
  • Rockets forward Colin Long could have been seeing stars too, but avoided an Alex Plante forearm that just missed Long's head. Michael Stone also got into the act with two solid hits, forcing Rockets rookie Mitchell Callahan to ask the skilled defenceman to a fight. Stone made the wise decision by rejecting Callahan’s proposal.
  • While the Hitmen pushed the envelope physically, Rockets forward Cody Almond was the most aggressive Rockets forward by either taking a hit to make a play or taking out his frustrations on a Hitmen physically.
  • Evan Bloodoff is arguably the fastest skater on the Kelowna Rockets and used that speed to perfection Saturday night. Bloodoff blew past two Hitmen defenceman by using his speed to the outside and essentially set up two of the Rockets four-third period goals. Only teammate Brandon McMillan could match Evan’s breakaway speed.
  • I still believe the Rockets defensive core has benefited from the loss of Luke Schenn. It may sound like an odd statement, but Schenn’s absence forced Tyler Myers, Tyson Barrie, Tysen Dowzak and Collin Bowman to play big minutes in crucial situations this season. Schenn’s absence also meant Brandon McMillan was forced to play defense after starting the season as a forward. Would I have rather seen Schenn in a Rockets uniform than wearing Leafs colours this season? Obviously, but being forced to play without him has made this group better players.
  • How much credit does assistant coach Jeff Finley receive in working with this group?
  • Paul Postma may have been a minus 4 in game two, but the Hitmen defenceman has a bullet from the blue line. Only teammate Michael Stone has a harder shot. Yet the Rockets are keenly aware of their shoot first mentality and are doing a great job of getting into shooting lanes. I don’t think I‘ve ever seen a Rockets team block shots and get into shooting lanes better than this years edition. No one gets more shots off his shins than defenseman Tysen Dowzak.
  • Pat Smith and Devin Klein, please refer to how you called the game in the third period of game two and offer us that excellent display over a full 60 minutes. A non-factor in the final 20 minutes allowed the two teams to settle the game on their own merits. If we notice you – bad. If you are invisible – good!
  • Despite making it a two goal game, his reaction and the reaction of those around him after a goal by Hitmen defenceman Keith Seabrook with 7 minutes left in the game gave me the sense that a late period comeback bid would fall short. The body language spoke volumes.

well the question has to be asked although you may not know the answer.....Can we expect to see Benn play another game in this series ?? Man losing Benn is tough but you can see why the Hitmen would want to shut him down after his three point night Friday.

WOW Kudos to all the players for the game last night..It was really frustrating to see jamie get off the ice with the idea of him not being able to finish the game,,,,,This is the time where Grantham has to settle some score did he turn into a finesse player now...Come on play your game and get somebody aware of your presence ... Guggy was unbelievable .what a treat to see him make save after save. The team really look solid in the stretch home (last 10 minutes) .And Regan you might be right that Schenn absence was the real catalyst in getting the core of our D so good now. All right get your voices tune up monday night will be fun only 2 more wins for the trip to Rimouski. Lets go boys keep the same focus you can almost touch your goal...

Great officiating....not.

Good to hear that Benn will be back on Monday. Equally as good is to see Evan, Ian and Mark step up... incredible depth Rockets!

Wow speed does kill!! You just gotta love that Calgary "D", they are so big, mobile & move the puck around with ease but when it comes to having to skate backwards quickly, forgit about it!! The Rockets speed is just too much for them, & that will be their demise!! I heard that KSD has the flu & should return, & we all know that Big Benn will shake off the cobwebs & be back tomorrow night. Go Rockets !!

Regan would you consider the hit by Seabrook on Benn late? As it seemed that Benn had been without the puck for some time and wasn't fully prepared to take a hit. And I was wondering if he got an elbow up? The replay wasn't all that great.

glad i got front row tickets to the game in advance,i was honestly expecting we'd be down 2-0 or 1-1 with what i'd seen from calgary, but next to each other, they aren't so bad after all, although, with that said i don't believe we've seen calgary's best, they've turned it on at times but if they have a solid game or two here this series could head east looking different.

any update on benn and if/when he'll be back on monday? Another thing, how you can win against the top team in the league without arguably (check the spelling, who knows) the best scorer in the league..really speaks to the charachter of some of the 3rd and 4th line guys that had to step up.

Here is what concerns me: The head hunt on Long by Plante. Plante Took a good 4-5 strides from the blue-line and took a leap with his elbow up towards Long's head. Fortunately Long was able to move a few inches or he would have been done like dinner. Where were our enforcers? After the hit that put Benn out of the game and seeing Plante try to take Long out of the game, should someone not step up and fight for their leaders?? Arguable the 2 best forwards on the team are taken runs at and noone throws the gloves??? Grantham are you out there???????

Adversity build character and the Rocket boys have built CHARACTER IN SPADES. The whole team stepped up when one of their own went down and really what does that message say. I do think that Seabrook is out to hurt Benny and that hit in game 2 was intentional and should have drawn a penalty. I think that Seabrook had better watch his back in Kelowna, cause I know what Benny is like when he gets mad. The boys are doing a great job in defending against the Hitmen and I think for us going in deep and crashing the net is sure in our favour. As for Evan, what a great player. I have always liked his speed and his great play when he is asked to step up. We will be coming to the games (we are from out of town) on Monday and Wednesday and really looking forward to a sold out rink and a win for the home team. GO ROCKETS GO!!!!!!!!!

The Rockets coaching staff think it was a late hit. I would need to see it again on replay before making a decision.

Regan: I've watched the hit several times and I'd like to say it was late, but really it was finishing the check like we were all taught to do.

Don't worry about Benn though, he is without a doubt one of the toughest guys in the league and this will just wake him up.

Regan after game 2 a calgary radio station said the media were calling Guggenberger... Guggenburglar. lol

Love it. Not sure if stole a game but he stole the show.

any word on benn's status for monday/wednesday and/or the status/severity of his injury?

Regan Bartel said...

My belief is Benny will be a game time decision. He wanted to come back and play but the team doctor said it would be best to sit out the remainder of the game. I thought it was a smart move on the teams behalf.

dav- your comment on Grantham.... spot on man

I think grantham would love to be out there to protect his players but are the coaches telling him something different??? We have not seen him doing that role as much...are they afraid of penalties? I personally would love to see him out there a lot more crashing the bodies and getting to the front of the net causing havic.
