It felt odd that the Rockets didn’t have to play Saturday night. The day off allowed David and I the chance to stay in Lethbridge overnight while the team headed for Regina immediately after the game. We left Lethbridge Saturday morning and made a stop in Swift Current, my hometown!
One of our objectives during the day off was to find an outdoor rink where we could lace e’m up, and play some shinny on a cool prairie day. Despite the outdoor rinks officially opening in Swift Current on Monday, we happened to find some ice in the Northern part of the city.
I persuaded David to make a stop at the home of the Swift Current Broncos, where the arena is undergoing a major renovation.
While the arena has new seating on the East end, David pointed out that not all seats at the former arena known as the Civic Centre are ideal:
Luke Schenn was the Rockets best player Friday night. Schenn played in the neighborhood of 30 minutes, the most of any Rockets player. The coaching staff are obviously getting all they can from the Saskatoon resident before he heads off to Team Canada’s training camp.
It will be nice to see Pats forwards Kirt Hill and Troy Ofukany before Sunday’s game. The former Rockets still have a special place in our hearts, and while they are now the enemy, it will be nice to touch base with two players who brought a smile to our faces during their time in Kelowna.
Kristofer Westblom is expected to get the start Sunday against the Pats. Torrie Jung allowed just two goals over 65 minutes against the Hurricanes Friday night, but struggled in the shootout. I would anticipate Jung back in goal Tuesday against Moose Jaw before Westblom faces Brandon Wednesday night. That said, if one goaltender steps up and takes charge, he may see action in the remaining 4 games on the trip.
I have to make a correction on the start of Sunday’s game in Regina. AM 1150 will have the broadcast starting with the WHL Primetime at 11:30 and the play-by-play at noon. The game time locally in Regina is 2 o’clock.
Here are some other pics. This is the lovely sign greeting us as we arrive in Swift Current Saskatchewan. David isn't so convinced Swift Current is 'where life makes sense'.
David and I in the broadcast booth in Lethbridge. Unlike what happened to Jon Rosen of the Everett Silvertips in his last visit to the Enmax Centre, we had no problems below our broadcast location.
The score clock at Prospera Place isn't as bad as I originally thought. The one in Lethbridge is as bad, or worse.

I was questioned by David on what this was at the end of the arena at Enmax Centre. The mannequin is all geared up in Hurricane gear with it's arms and legs moving back and forth during the course of the game, in a running motion, not a skating motion. It's purpose? A conversation piece? I love the duct tape to keep the skates intact.

Those are some sweet photos. Gotta love the outdoor rinks, and of course the mechanized Hurricane player. That duct tape is an extra special touch. I'm sure the kids in Lethbridge are terrified of that thing. It's probably the source of many a nightmare.
