Rockets Practice In Pictures

Injured forward Lucas Bloodoff putting on a sweat by running the stairs. Bloodoff is out no less than 4 weeks with a broken hand.

I wanted to take a picture of Rockets goaltender Kris Lazaruk's paint job on his mask. That will have to be removed as GM Bruce Hamilton isn't keen on his goaltenders having outlandish art work on their masks. In speaking with Lazaruk and Adam Brown today, they both should have colour coordinated equipment in about a month. For now, Larazuk is wearing black pads with the gold trim of the Kootenay Ice. Brown's gear is white with green trim after playing midget hockey in Dallas.
It's a huge learning curve for rookies making their mark in the WHL. Here 16 year-old Spencer Main gets grilled by Cap News reporter Warren Henderson. Ok, not grilled. But media attention is just part of it when your playing at this level. My feeling is the players love it.
A picture of Rockets rookie defenseman Curt Gogol. The well spoken 17 year-old was a pleasure to talk to this afternoon. I'll share more on him on a post tomorrow.

You gotta love a control freak not letting the goalies paint their masks. If its such a problem, why do NHL teams allow their goalies to do it? Maybe the Boss is smarter than all those NHL teams I guess.

Being a former goaltender, I like the painted masks, but that's just me. I will say that Bruce Hamilton does not short change his players one bit. The best example of that may be the new bus they will be driving down to Kamloops Friday night. From all accounts it is an outstanding ride. Hamilton is very generous with his players when it comes to team gear, sticks and medical assistance. He takes education very seriously, and does not let his high school players off the hook. He could turn a blind eye to it, but he doesn't. Ask any player who has been in another organization and has moved to Kelowna, and let them tell you what their experience has been. They will all say that playing in Kelowna felt like what it must be to play pro. If Hamilton's greatest hang-up is not allowing his goalies to have a design on their masks, I think Lazaruk and Brown can live with that.
