- As much as you have to give the Giants credit for tying the series at one, I just didn't like the Rockets intensity/urgency level in game two. Maybe I was just spoiled after game one? What I saw from the visitors in game one was a team playing like it was game seven, not game one. Game two unfortunately was well short of the performance the visitors exhibited less than 24 hours earlier.
- The Rockets allowed the Giants 9 chances on the power play, which is hockey suicide at this time of the year. Many of the penalties were uncalled for fouls, including several high sticking infractions. It again showed me that the Rockets weren't mentally 'locked in' during Sunday's effort.
- I don't have a problem when the officials call Mikael Backlund for tripping a Giants defenseman in overtime, only if a call is also made when Curt Gogol is hit into the corner by defenseman Brent Regner. Neither came close to a scoring chance, yet Backlund gets the gate in overtime on a marginal call while Regner's suspect hit on Gogol is viewed as just that, suspect.
- I liked the game winning goal. Why? It was ugly, and is typical of the way overtime goals are scored in the playoffs. A shot from the point hits a Giants forward parked in front of the net, next thing you know, it's a mad scramble and Casey Pierro -Zabotel deposits the puck past goaltender Mark Guggenberger. The Rockets had a similar chance in overtime, yet a Collin Bowman slap shot from the point is snared out of mid air by Giants goaltender Tyson Sexsmith with no traffic in front.
- The best Rocket? Mikael Backlund showed the most consistent energy over the course of the game. Long, Benn and Almond provided pressure, but were not consistently causing havoc in the attacking zone. Backlund could have been the goat for two penalties taken late in the game, one in the third period and one in overtime, yet his team was able to kill them off.
- It's amazing what the Rockets can accomplish when they put their minds to it. Down 3-1 late in the third, two quick goals and the game has to be decided in overtime.
- The Giants out-shot the Rockets 11-5 in the extra period, thanks largely to two power play chances, but more so out of desperation to get back in the series. While the Rockets wanted game one more than the Giants, and succeeded, the roles were reversed Sunday night.
- You have to love the play of Lance Bouma. The feisty forward has provided energy for the Giants in the first two games of this series and arguably has been the teams most consistent forward. Evander Kane has looked good in spurts, but in my eyes it's been Bouma leading the charge.
- The overtime loss was the Rockets first in this years playoffs. The Rockets were able to win overtime games against Kamloops and Tri City. Cody Almond and Jamie Benn were the hero's in those games.
- The loss snapped the Rockets four game winning streak against the Giants. The Rockets won the last three games during the regular season and game one of this series.
- The loss also means a game five will be played Saturday night in Vancouver. No matter what happens in games three and four in Kelowna, we are headed back to Pacific Coliseum Saturday night.

Split On Opposition Ice

Regan, I completely agree with your comments about the lack of urgency. Still, a split in Vancouver is pretty positive.
One question though, what happened to the Rockets hitting? Is it just that Vancouver is harder to hit than Tri-Cities, or are they afraid to take penalties, or what?
Lack of urgency seems to happen a lot with the Rockets boys. When they play with urgency they are a great team. Should have been up 2-0 going home and had a stranglehold on the Giants. They are a strong bunch of boys and should be hitting every chance they can. Knocking off the top team should should be enough to bring URGENCY to their game
Agreed. The Rockets could be much more physical. I anticipate that area improving significantly in game three.
The penalties, must end or the Rocket's will be in big trouble, as far as the lack of hitting I have no doubt it has to do with all the penalties they are taking!! Agree or disagree Regan?
Playing shorthanded for 18 minutes - or pretty much one period - puts pressure on the penalty killers, and doesn't allow the likes of Gogol and Callahan much ice time to play the physical game. That area needs to improve tomorrow night.
I'm sure it will Regan, the Rocket's have proven that they are a dominant, physical team on home ice. Looking forward to it, should be a great game & if these two games aren't sold out I'll be shocked!!
Regan any thoughts:::
Novatny playing on the fourth line????
Who will KSD be team up with and how do you think that will impact the chemistry of the team.
Will we see him in games 3 and 4. Sure would be nice.
If St-D is injected into the lineup, I would think McColgan, Main and Borejko are the scratches. With St-D's skill set, I could see him on the third line to start, before moving up to the top two lines once he becomes more comfortable. I like Lucas Bloodoff with Benn and Long, but wouldn't be at all surprised to see him take a shift their if they need some added speed. I don't know if you can disturb the Backlund, Duval, Almond line. Those three - especially Duval and Backlund - have something going.
some random thoughts on your post... on the Rockets lack of intensity I think the Giants continued their better play from the 3rd per. of gm 1. as somebody else mentioned "it's hard to hit what you can't catch." I said earlier that kelowna had to watch out for the Giants pp. ...I do agree with you about Regner's hit. I was surprised there was no call. However, I have to disagree with you about slew-footing by Backlund being "marginal." ...unfortunately after 2 and a half solid periods we took our foot of the pedal and allowed the Rockets back in it. it took too long for the Giants to finally beat the "post-trade deadline" Rockets. we need 2 good all-round road games to get control back in this series. gotta continue bottling up Backlund & Duval and Benn & Long. a difficult but not impossible task against a team surely motivated to do better at home. GO GIANTS!!
I agree where is the hitting. Grantham is an awesome checker and is hard to move from in front of the net and causes havic in front of the goalie. Why do we not see more of him in that role especially on the powerplay. We have seen he is an assest on what ever line he plays. So where is he?
I like when 'Granny' parks himself on the goaltenders door step, but I can't complain with the Rockets power play in the last few games. They were 40 percent against Tri and are just over 22 percent in this series. I just want to see him contribute more physically.
ouver's home ice advantage. If we win our home games, we win the series, which i don't see being that tough to do.
GO ROCKETS GO
