Game notes vs. Blazers

Tonight’s Preview: The Kelowna Rockets close the month of January with the first of a home and home series with the Kamloops Blazers. The Rockets are 5-0-0-0 against the Blazers in the seasonal series and are coming a 7-1 win in the last meeting on December 27th. In the Rockets last visit to the Interior Savings Centre (November 30th) Jackson Whistle made 35 saves in a 3-2 shootout win. Following tonight’s game the two teams meet tomorrow night at Prospera Place. The Rockets enter tonight’s game having won 24 of their last 29 games overall and 33 of their last 39 games. Seven of the Rockets next nine games are on home ice.

Bell closing in on 30: Leading scorer Myles Bell is one goal shy of scoring 30 goals for a second straight season. Bell would become just the 7th player to accomplish that feat in franchise history. The last Rockets player to score 30 or more goals in back-to-back seasons was Jamie Benn. Also on that list, Colin Long, Justin Keller, Cam Paddock, Brett McLean and Jason Deleurme are part of the 30/30 club.

Who’s Hot: Rourke Chartier has 6+7=13 in his last ten games…Damon Severson has 2+8=10 in his last ten games…Myles Bell has 8 goals in his last twelve games and has seven – two goal games this season…Madison Bowey has 2+5=7 in his last nine games…The Rockets are 38-4-0-3 in their last 45 home games dating back to last season.

This and That: The Rockets are playing their 18th game in 34 days…..In February the team will play 13 games in 28 days….Marek Tvrdon turns 21 today….Cole Martin is +92 over the last two seasons…Rourke Chartier has points in seven of his last ten games…Riley Stadel had 7 goals in his first nine games. The 17 year-old has three goals in his last 33 games….Myles Bell has 10 goals in January. Ryan Olsen has 7 goals in January. Rourke Chartier has 6 goals…The Rockets have allowed 86 fewer goals than the Blazers this season…The Rockets have 22 games left in the regular season. Thirteen are on home ice with 9 on the road…The Rockets open their longest home stand of the season tomorrow night when they play five consecutive games on home ice…The Rockets have scored six or more goals seven times on home ice this season… The Rockets are 13-2-0-0 in the second game when facing back-to-back scenarios this season….The team has been rated as the best team in the CHL according to the Top 10 junior rankings for five consecutive weeks….Six alumni of the Rockets’ will play for their respective countries at the Sochi Olympics. Jamie Benn, Shea Weber and Duncan Keith will wear colours for Canada. Alex Edler (Sweden), Lauris Darzins ( Latvia) and Thomas Raffl (Austria) will also compete…After losing two of his first three games, Jackson Whistle has won ten of his last eleven games….The Rockets have played in six shootout games this season and are 4 and 3. Three of the four shootout wins have come on the road in Victoria, Prince George and Seattle…Jordon Cooke is 38-5-0-2 at home in last 45 starts at home dating back to last season…The Rockets have scored 4 or more goals in 21 of their 28 road games this season.

A new edition

A new edition to our family. We picked up our new 2014 Kia Forte Ex from Kelowna Kia.
Thanks to Mak and Marshall for making this possible. The service at Kelowna Kia is outstanding and the product is worth looking at. I checked the competition and found this to be the best sedan out there for our family. You will be as impressed as I was at the look of the car, its features and the service.

From in control to out of control

  • Now they know how the Brandon Wheat Kings feel. Back on December 13th the Kelowna Rockets shocked the Wheat Kings in a come-from-behind 6-5 overtime win. The Wheat Kings were in total command of that game with a 5-3 lead with less than three minutes left in regulation time. The visitors would roar back and score three unanswered goal including the game winner in overtime in a shocking comeback. Last night at Prospera Place, the Spokane Chiefs scored three-third period goals and then found the game winner from defenceman Jason Fram in a shocking 6-5 shootout win. Yep, the top team in the WHL had a 5-2 lead heading into the third period after a dominating second where they scored four goals and out-shot the Chiefs 20-6. The third period was a different story though, as the comeback started with a goal just 25 seconds into the third period and the rally was on.
  • The Chiefs elected to change goaltenders after 40 minutes as 20 year-old Brian Williams was replaced  by back-up Garret Hughson. Did Spokane head coach Don Nachbaur make the change to give his team a spark or was he saving Williams from a tough night where his goals against average was going to take a beating? If you want to believe that the change was made to give his team a boost, then I guess it worked. Honestly, a goaltendering change usually makes little difference but the Chiefs played a much more inspired game in the third period regardless, out-shooting the Rockets 13-4. And lets give Hughson some credit here. The 18 year-old stopped all 8 shots he faced, including all six shooters in the shootout.
  • The Kelowna Rockets still have much to learn. They have the best record in the WHL but like any junior hockey team they made mistakes that will  need correction with 23 games left in the regular season. The Rockets made uncharacteristic errors in the third period by failing to make the easy play inside their own zone. Specifically the defenceman over-handled pucks and instead of moving the puck up ice, played it behind their net resulted in at least one goal making the score 5-4. The decision making process when under siege has to change. The Rockets will never be in total control of the game. Last night's third period has to be used as a learning tool so when it happens again - which it will - they will be better prepared to make the right decisions.
  • I didn't like two of three penalty calls made against the Rockets in the third period, specifically the Kris Schmidli penalty with five minutes left in the third period which resulted in the games tying goal.  But in saying that, why as a player do you put yourself in that position to take a questionable penalty late in the game? You have to play smart. You can make contact, but you can't take an extra stride or leave your feet. You can't use your stick in a careless manner. The officials will be looking for any minor infraction, especially when you've been granted five straight power plays.
  • Speaking of the power play, a true positive in last night's setback. While giving up a shorthanded goal, the extra man generated two goals including a beautiful pass from Ryan Olsen to Rourke Chartier to make the score 4-2. The key to the power play was quicker puck movement. Colton Heffley's power play goal snapped a 0 for 27 slump.
  • I thought Ryan Olsen had a great game. The 19 year-old had a goal and two assists and worked hard. I thought he was the teams best older forward. Again, a quiet night for the line of Tyson Baillie, Myles Bell and Tyrell Goulbourne. Those three have to be difference makers in games against the better teams. That line didn't generate a point and two of those three players are the top two point producers.
  • Ugly stat of the night. Three of the Rockets top four point getters (Bell, Baillie and Bowey) didn't register a point last night. If your last name started with 'B' it was bad news.
  • The Rockets can thank Jordon Cooke for the one point earned in the shootout. Cooke made a glove hand save on Adam Helewenka in the third period that will surely make the WHL Plays of the Week. It was a tremendous save when the Chiefs were buzzing inside the Rockets zone. I thought Cooke did a good job of bouncing back after surrendering a goal by Spokane's Reid Gow 8 minutes into the game.
  • A rough night for the defensive pairing of Cole Martin and Madison Bowey. You won't often see those two with a combined rating of -4. Martin and  Bowey were asked to play against the Chiefs top line, which included WHL points leader Mitch Holmberg. Speaking of Holmberg, a quiet night for the 20 year-old yet he still walked away from Prospera Place with a goal and two assists. Hard to call that a quiet night, but seriously he didn't stand out in a big way. Holmberg is very opportunistic and makes smart plays, whether it be in the o-zone or at the other end of the ice. Holmberg is sneaky good.
  • Colton Heffley's goal was his first in 15 games and matches his goal total from last season.
  • Damon Severson's goal was his first in nine games. That was the New Jersey Devils longest scoring drought of the season.
  • The loss snapped the teams 9 game home ice winning streak.
  • The Rockets are 4-3 in the shootout. The three shootout losses have come against Victoria, Seattle and Spokane.

Penalty trouble plays role in Rockets road loss

  • Simply put, the Seattle Thunderbirds played with more desperation. The end result was a 4-1 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets Sunday in a much anticipated game between two playoff rivals.  The T-Birds were willing to hit, block shots and sacrifice the body in an effort to record the win.  A shot block by T-Birds defenceman Adam Henry on Rockets rookie Dalton Yorke two minutes into the game was a sign of the home team’s commitment to winning at any cost.  It was a constant theme as the T-Birds proved they are legitimate contenders in the Western Conference.
  • I don’t think it would be fair to suggest the Rockets started slowly. With about five minutes remaining in the first period the visitors had a 11-3 shot advantage. Tyrell Goulbourne would score a shorthanded goal to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Philadelphia Flyers draft pick’s jump in his step was a sign of things to come as Goulbourne was the team’s best forward. Celebrating his 20th birthday, Goulbourne skated hard throughout the 60 minute effort and played arguably one of his best games this season.
  • The turning point was the Rockets inability to score a power play goal when the game was tied at one. Jaimen Yakubowski was assessed a double minor for a hit to the head and an unsportsmanlike penalty yet the Rockets couldn’t score. That ugly thing called momentum shifted after the Yakubowski penalty expired and the T-Birds scored 27 second later to make the score 2-1. It was the second of four unanswered goals for Seattle, who won for the 31st time this season.
  • The Rockets took far too many penalties. It was so uncharacteristic of this team, which prides itself on being smart with their sticks and tracking down the puck without taking the easy way out. I saw far too many lazy penalties which resulted in hooking or tripping calls. The T-Birds were awarded eight power play chances and scored two goals, including a 5 on 3 goal when both Carter Rigby and Madison Bowey were in the penalty box.
  • What did Rockets assistant coach Dan Lambert think of the effort? His comment on the post game show told the story. “I think it is a combination of us being a little bit lazy, a little fatigue but I think a lot of it is arrogance. We have had a lot of success and I think all of a sudden we think we are invincible and that’s not the case. As soon as you start thinking that, then not so good things happen”, Lambert added.
  • The frustrating aspect of the teams play in the T-Birds zone was the missed shots on net. Often the Rockets were simply to fine in shooting for corners and missing high and wide.
  • It wasn’t all negative. I thought the line of Justin Kirkland, Cole Linaker and Kris Schmidli worked hard and Ryan Olsen and Nick Merkley had some good ‘try’ in their game.  I also thought Dalton Yorke, for the rare shifts he received, had some bright moments. Of the 34 shots on net, Yorke had at least two of them.
  • Two scouts that I spoke with prior to the game were specifically in Kent to see 17 year-old Justin Kirkland. Oddly, both were from the same team – the Vancouver Canucks.
  • It marked only the second time this season the Rockets have lost in regulation time after opening the scoring.
  • How good is Shea Theodore? Yikes. The smooth skating defenceman is the same age as Madison Bowey. A 1995 born player, Theodore is as good a d-man as you will find in the WHL right now. Can anyone skate as well as he can? The only thing holding him back is his defensive play and from what I witnessed Sunday night, right now that isn't much of a factor when you can make decisions as quickly with the puck as he can.
  • The Rockets have lost only twice to a U.S based team. Both setbacks were on the road to Seattle and Spokane.
  • The Rockets have lost four of their last eight road games.
  • The Rockets are now 10-2-0-0 in three in three night situations.

Bowey brilliant in win over Tigers

  • Madison Bowey was clearly the best player on the ice last night in a 6-2 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers. Coach Ryan Huska called him the most mentally prepared player on his team. The three star selection committee didn't find his work overly spectacular despite scoring once and picking up two assists. The 18 year-old's second period goal was a laser beam like wrist shot that rifled past Tigers starting goaltender Marek Langhamer to give his team its first lead of the game. Bowey now has 15 goals, which is tied for the league lead by WHL defenceman. The franchise record for goals by a d-man is 19 set by Tyson Barrie.
  • Much like Wednesday's 6-3 win over Everett, this game was much closer than the score would indicate. This was a two goal game with 8:20 remaining in the third period before Mitch Wheaton scored a four on four goal to make the score 5-2.
  • What's with Mitch Wheaton? The 18 year-old has 13 more points than he had all of last season. While that isn't a significant improvement, it is startling considering he is regarded as a defender not a player that figures in on the score sheet often. While it is nice to see him getting offensive success, he can't forget what his bread and butter is - strong defensive hockey. Arguably himself and Cole Martin are the two best shutdown d-men the team have on the blue line.
  • I continue to be impressed with Damon Severson. Oh sure, he is often casual with the puck but how many times has he been beaten to the outside by a quick skating forward? He doesn't. Severson's quick stick was impressive last night when he deflected a puck out of play after a Tiger penalty came to an end. Trevor Cox came out of the penalty box and tried to sneak behind the 19 year-old defenceman for a long bomb pass which was taken away as Severson niftily directed it out of play. It is a small play in the big scheme of things, but worthy of note in my opinion.
  • The Rockets are now a sparkling 37-4-0-2 on home ice in the last two seasons.
  • Jordon Cooke leads all goaltenders with 27 wins this season.  The club record is 44 set by Kelly Guard in 2003-2004. Cooke needs 17 more wins in the teams 25 regular season games. It is doable, but Cooke has to almost be flawless while Jackon Whistle would only start 8 more games this season.

Notes, quotes and anecdotes

2004 Memorial Cup ring
  • Could we see Mitch Callahan in the NHL sooner rather than later? The former Kelowna Rockets forward is close to finding himself skating with the Detroit Red Wings. Callahan leads the AHL's Grands Rapid Griffins with 16 goals and Red Wings Chief Amateur Scout Jeff Finley likes the way the third year forward is playing. "He is having an outstanding year for us. He is not far off from being called up soon. The coach loves him. His foot speed was in question when he moved to pro. It has gotten better every year and he has improved. If he doesn't play for the Red Wings, I anticipate him playing in the NHL with another team in the future".
  • Finley also believes Marek Tvrdon is best suited for another season in the WHL. The 4th round pick of the Red Wings is now suiting up for the Kelowna Rockets. "He is a big strong kid. He is very talented. He plays an NHL style of game where he protects the puck very well below the circles in the offensive zone. What he lacks is a little bit of drive in the other two zones. I think this (Kelowna) is the best development team in junior hockey as there is," Findlay added.
  • What did Everett Silvertips head coach Kevin Constantine think of Canucks bench boss John Tortorella's antics when he attempted to enter the Calgary Flames dressing room Saturday night? "I admire John's honesty about situations. He see's situations and is brave enough to give honest answers about them. As players, even though he is honest about them that are hard to take, they understand that he has there best interest in mind in most situations".
  • Well deserved. On the 10th anniversary of the Kelowna Rockes winning the 2004 Memorial Cup, the team will be inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame this July in Penticton. That team won 47 games and were WHL regular season champions that season. Eight players on that 04' team would play in at least one NHL game. I don't wear my Memorial Cup ring often, but the organization was gracious enough to present me with one at seasons end. What does that say about Bruce Hamilton and the organization? Like I mentioned when the Portland Winterhawks gave WHL championship rings to broadcasters Todd Vrooman and Andy Kemper, it is nothing short of class.
  • Is Jesse Lees a better forward than he is a defenceman? The 18 year-old has two goals as a forward since he was moved up front on a recent Central Division road trip and saw success with Cole Linaker and Kris Schmidli Wednesday night against Everett. "I still love playing d. You have to think a lot more at forward. On defence you can see the ice better," Lees added.
  •  Mitch Wheaton and Damon Severson are arguably the teams best d-pairing. The two are a combined +17 in January. Wheaton says the +/- rating puts a smile on his face. "Being a defensive defenceman, the plus-minus means a lot to me. I try not to look to much into it but I take pride in it."
  • The Kelowna Rockets penalty killing unit remains the best in the WHL. One reason why is the pride it takes to keep the oppositions top players off the score-sheet. "Call me crazy, but the most favourite part of the game is the penalty kill", defenceman Mitch Wheaton told me last week. "For some reason I love having the ability to stop two guys by myself ". The Rockets have killed off 33 of their last 35 kills.
  • Carter Rigby is playing some of his best hockey of the season, but the 19 year-old admitted to me Wednesday that he can be better. "No, I don't think anyone should be completely happy with the way they are playing. If you look at my first 15 games and my last 15 games, I have made a huge stride playing with Colton Heffley and Rourke Chartier. Definitely it isn't the best hockey I've played. I need to be a 200 foot player and it wouldn't be bad to chip in with a few more assists", Rigby said with a chuckle. The pride of Penticton has just three assists in 30 games this season.
  • Will beats skill. It is a famous quote that came out of the mouth of Kevin Constantine when he was the head coach of the San Jose Sharks. I asked Constantine on Wednesday if he ever thought that quote would have the traction it has gained in hockey circles over the years? "No. I also made Jeopardy when I said, 'hockey players speak two languages, English and profanity'. I really do believe will beats skill. The foundation of the game is work and passion. If you are into the game enough to go be physical and throw yourself into the battle situations, that same mentality makes you a skilled player at the end of the day. You find at the end of those nights you find the way to score a big goal. But did I think that quote would stick, no".
  • Don't be fooled into thinking 20 year-old Myles Bell isn't smelling the roses as his final season of junior hockey comes to an end. I reflected with him on his 300th career game last Friday in Victoria. "I think for some of us here that have the opportunity to make it a career, I don't see myself going to school over playing hockey. I can't imagine not playing hockey. The more pressure on us this season makes it more fun. With us winning all the time it makes it easy to show up at the rink and have any off days", Bell added.

Patience a virtue in Rockets home ice win

Marissa Baecker - Shoot The Breeze Photography
  • The Everett Silvertips are a frustrating team to play against. Just ask the Kelowna Rockets. Patience was a virtue Wednesday night in a 6-3 home ice win over the Tips. The Rockets built up a 3-0 lead but the Silvertips stormed back to make it a one goal game late in the third before two empty net goals sealed the win for the home team. It was the Rockets' 7th straight home ice win and handed the Silvertips just their 5th regulation loss on the road this season.
  • Tyson Baillie will be credited with the game winning goal after he scored 8 minutes into the second period to make it a 4-1 lead. It was Baillie's first goal in nine games. The 18 year-old  intercepted a pass/miss pass that went awkwardly off the stick of Everett d-man Mirco Mueller behind the net and landed on Baillie's stick at the side of the goal. Baillie quickly fired the puck short side past a startled Tips goaltender Austin Lotz to give the Rockets some breathing room.
  • The Tips received a three point effort from leading scorer Josh Winquist, but his second goal of the game was pure fluke. The 20 year-old tried to flip the puck in front of the Rockets net. Instead the puck bounced on the top of the net, then hit Jordon Cooke's glove and then his shoulder/back before entering the goal to make the score 4-2.
  • Despite the lopsided score, the game was in doubt when the Tips scored with just over five minutes left in the third period to make it a one goal game. It was only after empty net goals from Ryan Olsen and Tyrell Goulbourne that the Rockets and the 5 thousand and eight fans could breath easy.
  • Marek Tvrdon scored in his Kelowna Rockets home debut. The 20 year-old received a nice pass from rookie Nick Merkley, who stole the puck after a bad pass by Jujar Khaira and skated behind the net before centering it in front for an easy goal by Tvrdon. Outside of that play, a rather quiet night for that line that also includes Ryan Olsen.
  • Speaking of quiet nights, leading scorer Myles Bell failed to make much noise with line mates Tyson Baillie and Tyrell Goulbourne. I think it would be fair to say the best line for the Rockets was Cole Linaker with Kris Schmidli and Jesse Lees. Those three players ended the night with a combined five points. Lees was playing as a forward as rookie Justin Kirkland was given the night off to watch from the stands.
  • The Rockets third goal was the most  impressive considering the dominant play inside the Tips zone. The line of  Linaker, Schmidli and Lees had the visitors pinned in their own zone for an extended period of time. Winning board battles with the forwards distributing the puck back to the defenceman was as picture perfect a shift as you are going to find. Bottle that up and sell it. That sequence, which ended in a goal was pure gold.
  •  At the end of the night Josh Winquist is named the games first start. For my money the best Silvertip was d-man Ben Betker.  Betkler logged huge minutes and fought Colton Heffley. I thought the 19 year-old had a great game.
  • The Rockets power play was/is a sore point. While they only had three chances with the extra man considering the Tips simply don't take bad penalties, the extra skater produced few if any scoring chances. If the Rockets even registered a shot on net in those three power plays I would be surprised. You have to give Everett credit for getting into shooting lanes to block shots, but the best scoring chance came in the third period when Tips forward Kohl Bauml just missed teammate Mirco Mueller with a pass at the side of the net while playing shorthanded.
  • The Rockets will need to be a heck of a whole lot better when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers tomorrow night.

Rockets game notes vs. Tips

Tonight’s Preview: Two teams separated by 19 points in the Western Conference standings meet tonight when the Kelowna Rockets host the Everett Silvertips. The Rockets enter tonight’s game having won 21 of their last 24 games overall and 30 of their last 34 games.
